In a high-stakes rematch, Prolific Prep (CA) showcased resilience and skill Tuesday night, defeating the top-ranked Columbus High School (FL) 66-54 in Boca Raton, Florida. The clash of titans featured Grind Session Power 12 conference contender Prolific Prep, ranked #11 by Sports Illustrated, facing Columbus, the publication’s #1 high school team. The game was a chance for redemption for Prolific Prep after a heartbreaking overtime loss to Columbus last season.
Leading the charge for Prolific Prep was five-star senior point guard Darryn Peterson, who recently committed to Kansas and coach Bill Self. Peterson dominated with a stellar 33 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists, cementing his status as one of the nation’s top players.
The game started with Prolific Prep on the ropes, trailing by 9 points after the first quarter. However, they rallied to tie the game by halftime. Head coach Ryan Bernardi credited the team’s defensive adjustments and Peterson’s leadership for the turnaround.
“We weathered their storm well after the first quarter and were fortunate to only be down nine points,” Bernardi said. “Darryn’s shot at the end of the first quarter was huge, keeping it within single digits. He just controlled the game—his scoring kept us alive early, his playmaking stood out, and his defensive energy set the tone. He was the best player on the floor tonight.”
Prolific Prep’s defense shined in the second half, limiting Columbus’ high-powered offense while building a decisive lead. The team’s performance was rounded out by Nikola Bundalo, who posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and junior Seven Spurlock, who contributed 9 points and 6 boards.
Columbus saw strong efforts from Cameron Boozer and Caleb Gaskins, each scoring 15 points, while Jaxon Richardson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Despite their individual performances, Columbus struggled to maintain momentum against Prolific Prep’s defensive pressure.
The win marks a significant milestone for Prolific Prep as they gear up for a major Grind Session Power Conference game in two weeks against Utah Prep and standout AJ Dybantsa in Kentucky. Dybantsa, a former Prolific Prep star, transferred to Utah Prep this offseason, adding extra intrigue to the upcoming matchup.

Prolific Prep’s victory over the nation’s top-ranked team signals their readiness to contend for the Grind Session championship this season. As Coach Bernardi put it, “Tonight had a lot of similarities to games we lost last year, but we found a way to win. It started with defense, hitting free throws, and having a heck of a player like Darryn Peterson.”
